A fascinating exploration of art, culture and identity. Certain images, art objects and art styles have embedded themselves in the consciousness of many New Zealanders. But why and how have they become part of our visual vocabulary? Oliver Stead has selected 40 of these iconic works, and woven them into a story of New Zealand art and social history.
Oliver Stead was born in Auckland and studied Art History at the University of Auckland. Later, at the University of Otago, he completed a PhD on the New Zealand-born art dealer and collector Sir Rex Nan Kivell. From 1990-1996 Stead was Registrar at Dunedin Public Art Gallery; and from 1997-2008 Head of Collection Management at Auckland War Memorial Museum.
The son of writer, critic and poet, CK Stead, Oliver grew up surrounded by artists and writers who shared a passionate belief in the creativity of New Zealanders, born out of the country’s unique social and geographical character. He is married to designer Virginia Stead, and lives in Three Kings, Auckland.
