Christopher Johnstone Sydney-born Christopher Johnstone was brought up in England and Ireland and studied art history in the United States, graduating form Bennington College, Vermont. His career as an art museum curator and administrator began at the Tate Gallery, London, followed by senior positions at national and state art museums in Edinburgh, Perth and Adelaide. He was director of the Auckland Art Gallery from 1988 until 1995.

After six years in Melbourne, where he held sponsorship roles at Heide museum of Modern Art and the Frankston Arts Centre, he and his wife,Louise Louise returned to Grey Lynn, Auckland, where he is a writer and visual arts consultant.

Christopher Johnstone’s previous books include John Martin (1974), Fifty 20th Century Artists (1984) and Landscape Paintings of New Zealand: A Journey from North to South (Godwit 2006).
