The New Zealand Post Book Awards has been criticised for being a smaller and shorter event compared with previous years.

Booksellers NZ CEO Lincoln Gould says officials from Creative NZ, the NZ Book Council, the NZ Society of Authors, the Publishers Association and New Zealand Post all decided the changes were necessary. Gould confirms there were 15 submissions from the public on the matter. Gould states the changes do not make the ceremony cheaper. As previously stated, the structure of the Awards will be assessed at the end of this year as part of the regular annual review.
