Rangitoto tells the dramatic story of Auckland’s most striking icon – its volcanic birth, the kaka’s connection to Rangitoto, the imprint of humans on its fragile wildlife, and how the island’s guardians are saving it today.

Maria Gill lives on a lifestyle farm in Matakana with her family and a menagerie of animals. Her first book for children, Bird’s-eye View, was shortlisted for the LIANZA awards. It was also nominated by the Storylines Notable List as one of the top ten non-fiction books for 2006. Maria’s books carry an environmental message and she says she tries to sneak in native birds somewhere.
Heather Arnold designed and illustrated five stamp issues for New Zealand Post and was the author, designer and illustrator for Draw New Zealand Birds – first published by Reed Publishing in 2007. It has since been reprinted under the imprint of Puffin (Penguin Group (NZ). In 2008, it won a Storylines Notable Award for non-fiction and also the LIANZA Elsie Locke award for children’s non-fiction.
