Literary Legends Mahy and Cowley Finalists in the 2010 NZ Post Children’s Book Awards

Books by two of New Zealand’s most revered children’s writers – Margaret Mahy and Joy Cowley – feature in this year’s New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards finalist line-up.

Cowley’s Cowshed Christmas, illustrated by Gavin Bishop, and Mahy’s The Word Witch, edited by Tessa Duder and illustrated by David Elliot, are both finalists in the Picture Book Category.

New Zealand Society of Authors rallies

The New Zealand Society of Authors rallies in support of the National Library and Archives New Zealand – saying if it’s not broken then don’t fix it.

The New Zealand Society of Authors has strong reservations about the proposed merger of Archives New Zealand and the National Library into the Department of Internal Affairs. 

”This is obviously a cost cutting exercise on behalf of the government, and the Society questions the validity of such a move especially when it is clear that no significant savings will be achieved in the short term” CEO Maggie Tarver said.

Hole-in-one for Cure Kids at Paper Plus Charity Golf Day

Paper Plus has scored a hole-in-one for Cure Kids after raising more than $13,500 for the national charity at its annual charity golf tournament on Friday 19 February.

Over 120 Paper Plus suppliers attended the golf day held at Akarana Golf Club in Mt Roskill. The day’s play, which kicked off at 12.30pm after a sausage sizzle, involved 30 teams competing in the friendly Ambrose format.

Team entry fees, hole sponsorship, an enticing auction and raffle prizes, donated by a number of generous sponsors, ensured a great fundraising result.

e-warehouse for New Zealand titles just months away

An e-warehouse of hundreds of New Zealand books as a single point of purchase by Booksellers may be only months away.

Martin Taylor of the Digital Forum told The Read last night that: “while this work in progress, we are tantalising close to pulling off a common e-book distribution/ aggregation warehouse that would allow publishers to combine their e-resources.

In the emerging world of e-books, many consumers assume it is only logical that publishers are saving vast amounts by not having to print or distribute paper books, leaving room to pass along those savings to their customers.

Publishers largely agree, which is why in negotiations with Apple, five of the six largest publishers of trade books have said they would price most digital editions of new fiction and nonfiction books from $12.99 to $14.99 on the forthcoming iPad tablet — significantly lower than the average $26 price for a hardcover book.
