Judges' Report 2011

William’s kitchen table, Dee’s window seat and Ruth’s lounge sofa ‐ these were the settings where we spent much of our time last summer as we escaped into a variety of imaginative literary worlds.

With one book in hand and 104 piled up nearby, some with notes attached, the judges were looking for books with the ‘wow’ factor that could become future Kiwi classics, and were delighted to find some true gems submitted for the 2011 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards.

Towns and cities all over New Zealand will come alive with books during festival week this year (10-19 May 2010) as some of the country’s best authors and illustrators visit in celebration of this year’s New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children & Young Adults.

National Poetry Day

National Poetry Day is a one-day celebration of poetry run each year in conjunction with the New Zealand Post Book Awards.

Regional Coordinators 2010

Regional Coordinators are appointed to organise local festivities and events celebrating the New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children & Young Adults. This energetic group of volunteers works tirelessly to bring the New Zealand Post Book Awards alive in every part of the country.

Regional Festival Events 10-19 May 2010

During festival week this year, events and activities will be held in schools, libraries, bookshops, parks and community centres, featuring the 2010 New Zealand Post Book Awards finalists. Children across the country will be reading, writing, drawing, playing games, dressing up, and having a wonderful time celebrating children's literature in New Zealand.

It’s time to prepare for the New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards 2012... Point Of Sale (POS) packs are being distributed free of charge to every school, library and Bookseller NZ members this year.  Each pack will contain one copy of the Kiwi Kids’ Good Book Guide magazine/Resource Booklet.

Last Year’s Supreme Book Award Winner is This Year’s Top Judge

Last year Chris Bourke took home the country’s top literary honour – the New Zealand Post Book of the Year Award – for his work Blue Smoke: the Lost Dawn of New Zealand Popular Music 1918-1964. This year he heads up the judging panel for the same award.

A respected writer, reviewer, music historian and radio producer, Chris is well known as a former long-time producer for Radio New Zealand National’s Saturday Morning programme and as a staff writer and arts and books editor for print publications including The Listener.

Entries sought in search for New Zealand’s Best Books

Entries open today for the nation’s most prestigious book awards: the New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards and the New Zealand Post Book Awards 2012.

More than 2,000 entries are expected, from emerging and experienced authors across the country, but just a few will make it to the final shortlist.

Together the two awards reflect the diversity, depth, colour and flair of contemporary New Zealand writing.

New Governance Group for New Zealand Book Awards

Auckland University Press publisher, Sam Elworthy has been elected chair of the New Zealand Book Awards Governance Group, a new body established by the book industry to oversee the two book awards programmes sponsored by New Zealand Post.

Elworthy represents the Publishers Association of New Zealand with other members of the group being; Nicola Airey (New Zealand  Post),  Carole Beu (Booksellers NZ), Rosemary Wildblood (The New Zealand Society of Authors) and Catriona Ferguson (Creative New Zealand) .

The New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards and the New Zealand Post Book Awards are administered by Booksellers NZ on behalf of the industry.

Don’t miss the opportunity to meet the winning authors of the 2011 New Zealand Post Book Awards.They’ll be talking about their books, research, writing, new projects, what inspires them, and what books they’re reading.
