Mallinson Rendel Publishers Ltd was an independent company founded in 1980, having over 170 titles to its credit. After 1984 Mallinson Rendel concentrated on publishing quality children's fiction and picture books, and published approximately seven titles each year. Many of these won recognition in New Zealand literary awards.
Lynley Dodd's Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy, Hairy Maclary Scattercat, Hairy Maclary's Caterwaul Caper, Hairy Maclary's Showbusiness, Miriam Smith's Annie & Moon and Lesley Moyes' Alphabet Apartments were all winners of the Children's Picture Book of the Year Award. Mechanical Harry, Alphabet Apartments, Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack, and The Other Ark were all winners of the Children's Choice Award at the New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young People. In 2006 Lynley Dodd was awarded the Gaelyn Gordon Award for a Much-Loved Book for The Nickle Nackle Tree.
Recognition also came in the form of overseas sales with at least 50% of Mallinson Rendel's picture book and junior fiction titles finding overseas markets.
In December 2009 the Mallinson Rendel assets were acquired by Pearson NZ.
