Eight NZ Distilleries Chosen for Lonely Planet's Global Distillery Tour
A guide to tasting whisky, gin, bourbon and more at the world's best distilleries and bars, Lonely Planet’s Global Distillery Tour is published this month.
Lonely Planet’s Global Distillery Tour explores the exciting new world of spirits and cocktails. From gin, bourbon and whisky to vodka, cachaça, tequila and more, Lonely Planet Food’s specialist spirit reviewers, writers and bloggers recommend where to go and what to taste at the best distilleries and bars in more 30 countries.
New Zealand is represented in the book by eight distilleries: Puhoi Organic Distillery (Auckland), Prenzel (Blenheim), Cardrona Distillery (Cardrona), Lighthouse Gin (Martinborough), Liquid Alchemy (Nelson), New Zealand Whisky Collection (Oamaru), Dancing Sands (Takaka), and Kiwi Spirit Distillery (Takaka).
With local itineraries recommending top sights and experiences, as well as a special section showcasing the world’s best cocktails, Lonely Planet’s Global Distillery Tour also includes unmissable regional drinks from Australia, South Africa, Canada, Indonesia, the USA, Mexico, Japan, and the UK.
How to Use Lonely Planet’s Global Distillery Tour
Within each of the 33 countries in the book, Lonely Planet Food has organised the distilleries alphabetically by region. In the entry for each distillery, authors have suggested the must-try drink or tasting experience and have also recommended local sights. Also included in the distillery entries are a small number of bars that are best-in-class for their selection of one particular drink, such as arak in Lebanon or tuak in Malaysia, and for which distilleries are hard to find. And at the back of the book is a section dedicated to cocktails: the best mixology magic in the world, and the bars that serve them.
