Unity Books Wellington Shortlisted for Prestigious International Award

Wellington Indie book shop, Unity Books, is one of three  finalists in the International Bookstore of the Year category of the prestigious The London Book Fair International Excellence Awards 2019

Unity Books Wellington and the other finalists, BOA Bookstore (Vietnam) and Fang Suo Commune (China), are among entrants from 26 countries who have been shortlisted for the 2019 awards.

'Our competition spans the globe, so this really is a great honour. Being shortlisted alone is a great endorsement of my team, our local and global customers, authors, and publishers and it’s a real boost to the NZ book trade which is so full of personality and generosity,' says Unity Books co-owner, Tilly Lloyd.

'But it’s our customers who really set us apart. You should see them all in action. Nice work, Wellington book lovers.'

This is the second time a New Zealand bookshop has been short listed for this highly competitive international event. Time Out bookshop in Mt Eden, Auckland was shortlisted in 2017.

Ms Lloyd says that she and her team at their Willis Street, Wellington shop have been ‘completely re-charged’ by the news.

Ms Lloyd and Unity’s international books buyer, Marcus Greville, will travel to London for the awards presentation which will be held on Tuesday evening, March 12, at the Olympia Conference Centre.

'This is a great opportunity to share with and learn from our colleagues and fellow bibliophiles who, like us, are working to give our customers the service and experience they deserve.'

The Bookstore of the Year is one of 17 categories in the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards which celebrates outstanding bookshops, innovative publishing, and ground-breaking initiatives in the industry. The award recognises excellence in a range of areas, including customer service, staff knowledge, events and innovation.

The London Book Fair is the global marketplace for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content across print, audio, TV, film and digital channels. The awards are produced annually by the fair in partnership with the UK’s Publishers Association.
