Vale Paul Greenberg, 'The greatest salesman in the history of New Zealand publishing'

Booksellers NZ is sad to inform the book trade of the death of Paul Greenberg, on Sunday, 17 December.

For the last 20 years Greenberg operated Green Phoenix Marketing alongside his partner Joan Roulston, with whom he had previously founded the book distribution company Roulston Green.

Filling out his 50-year career in the industry, Greenberg had worked at Reeds, Macmillan, David Bateman, and John Wiley; he had represented Woodslane, Ingram, and Oxford.

Steve Braunias called him ‘The greatest salesman in the history of New Zealand publishing’, and his lifetime achievement award at the Booksellers NZ Book Industry Awards in 2016 was testament to this.

In October, we asked Marcus Greville to gather some anecdotes about Paul and his life in the book industry. You can find the article here.

Carole Beu from The Women’s Bookshop is gathering further anecdotes from booksellers and publishers - please send these to These will be read at Paul’s funeral at The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Palmerston North, from 1pm on Thursday, 28 December. Waistcoats optional (but preferred).
