Our annual Bookshop Day Treasure Hunt will commence in the shop on Saturday 27th October at 9am. Books will be wrapped in brown paper and hidden throughout the shop in their corresponding sections. One book per person, and will last only as long as the books do, so first in first served!

Competition: Rotorua's Peculiardom
To celebrate Ransom Riggs' new book Map of Days in the Miss Peregrine series, we will be holding a competition for the Peculiar people of Rotorua. 
To enter, email manager@mcleodsbooks.co.nz with a photo you have taken of either yourself/friend/family etc in the style of the photos from the books, along with a description of the model's peculiar ability. If you are taking a polaroid, just bring it into the shop. 
First prize will be a set of all 4 books in the series + 'Tales of the Peculiar', and three runners up will win a copy of 'Map of Days'! Photos entries will be featured on our social media. Runs for the month of October and winners will be announced on Tuesday 30th October at 4pm.

Competition: Under Five's Dress-Up 
We will be holding a book character-themed dress up competition for under 5 year olds (inclusive) on Friday 26th October at 11.30am in the shop! 
Prize for best-dressed will be children's books + $10 voucher for the Arts Village Cafe, and the two runners up will receive plush toy and a coffee voucher for the Arts Village Cafe. (Because the parents deserve a reward too!)

Moulded from the finest plaster of Paris, artists teeny to venerable are invited to collect their brain and get creative with it. Brains will be available for collection on Sunday 7th October and we would like them back by  Friday 26th October ready for display on the big day. The most striking brains will receive a book prize and we intend to create a big work of art using all brains submitted although you can of course have your brain back if you are reluctant to part with it. No rules apart from the dates. Just go for it. Multimedia, just pen, put hair on it, whatever. It’s your brain.

4.00pm - Donovan Bixley launches Mozart - The Man Behind the Music
In addition to awesome art, we also have the amazing wit, charisma and award winning talent that is Mr Donovan Bixley with us to launch his new book, Mozart; The Man Behind the Music. Donovan will be at Wardini Books Napier on Saturday 27th October (National Bookshop Day) at 4pm, chatting about what makes Mozart one of history’s most inspiring figures, sharing stories from this beautiful illustrated biography and signing copies of the book. Not to be missed.

Do you have kids aged between 7 and 14 who what it takes to be a Monster Investigator? Then sign them up for our Monster Project Workshop run by monster expert Susan Wildblood. 
Susan, who's based in the Wellington region, has proven her credentials as author of the Monster Project series of books - two books so far!
The workshop is expected to run for about an hour and is limited to a maximum of 10 children.

Learn how to make juggling balls as featured in Wellington author Maureen Crisp's two Circus Quest novels for ages 6 to 10: The Playbill and Magician's Moustache. Maureen will talk about her books, which include codes, slapstick humour and lots of dastardly villains, and will read a chapter or two. There may even be a quick lesson on how to juggle!

2pm - The Tiger Who Came to Tea Party
Join us for a tea party with stories, activities and stripey biscuits to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Judith Kerr's famous story about the greedy tiger who eats just about everything in Sophie's house. 
Book Girl, aka Freya Daly-Sadgrove, will read several picture books, including The Tiger Who Came to Tea.
There will be a tiger mask to decorate, tea party food and take-home bags.

4.30pm - Charity Book Launch for Young Elements Academy
Ten-year-old Maia Brown will be launching her book Young Elements Academy, with all the proceeds going to UNICEF.
Maia wrote her fantasy adventure story earlier this year and decided she wanted to publish more than just a few copies for family and friends. She had already raised money for UNICEF from running a bake sale and was super keen to do another fundraiser for the children's charity because she cares about what is happening to children in war zones.
We are delighted to support Maia's wonderful gesture. A UNICEF representative will speak at the launch.
