Bookshop Day is one-day nationwide celebration of all bookstores.
The day aims to highlight the cultural importance of books and bookshops, and celebrate the people that bring the two together, our amazing booksellers.
Booksellers are what make our book-buying experience so special – they are book experts, community champions, and match makers.
Bookshop day started in 2015 and is run by the Booksellers Association of New Zealand to encourage book lovers, like you, to shop at their local bookshop.
We have created a limited-edition tote bag with amazing artwork from Xoë Hall:
These bags will be available to purchase exclusively in-store from bookshops, another excellent reason to visit your local bookshop on Bookshop Day.
Visit your local bookshop/s on Saturday 7th October to join the celebrations!
Here's just a sample of the activity happening in bookshops across Aotearoa New Zealand:
The Wairarapa Bookshop Hop – Friday 6th-Sunday 8th October
The Wairarapa Bookshop Hop returns October 6-8, 2023 and this year the Wairarapa’s 12 booksellers will turn on a full weekend of bookish fun for readers in celebration of New Zealand Bookshop Day.
To participate in the Wairarapa Bookshop Hop, “Bookshop Hoppers” collect an official map from any of the participating bookstores. At each store, get a stamp on the map with purchase. Every stamp gives “Hoppers” another entry into the two prize draws totalling $800 in bookshop vouchers.
The organisers also have a special prize of $200 in bookshop vouchers for the best photo taken on the day. Use the hashtags #nzbookshopday and #wairarapabookshophop on Instagram or Facebook so the judges can discover your image.
