Membership of Booksellers NZ will allow you to:

  • Sell and redeem the Booksellers Gift Card – sold in supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations and department stores nationwide, but only redeemable at bookshops
  • Free membership of Retail NZ
  • Receive the weekly industry e-newsletter The Read, featuring the Nielsen BookData bestseller charts and the Indie Top 20
  • Participate in the Booksellers Aotearoa Exchange Card scheme which encourages the public to buy books as gifts for others
  • Receive Preview of Reviews – an advance list of the books reviewed in newspapers, magazines and on radio

Membership of Booksellers allows you to access the collective wisdom of booksellers from across Aotearoa, while giving you deals and information to help you run your business more effectively. 

The sale and redemption of Booksellers Tokens, administered by Booksellers Aotearoa and sold in over 200 bookshops nationwide, has the potential to make your bookshop thousands of dollars each year. And the exclusive redemption of Booksellers Gift Cards enables you to grow your clientele, who are able to purchase the cards in supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations and department stores nationwide.


As a member of an association dedicated to representing your interests at every level, you will also enjoy discount arrangements with regards bank fees, courier fees, insurances, and other ongoing costs of managing a business.

Booksellers Aotearoa represents over 70% of New Zealand booksellers, including independents and chain stores. Subscriptions to The Read for libraries and media start from just $100 + GST. Bookshops must become Business members to receive benefits of membership, while Publishers are asked to become Associate Members. 

Membership rates are based on revenue. For 2023-2024:

Tier 1 ($250,000 and over) is $682.50 + GST per annum
Tier 2 (under $250,000) is $472.50 + GST per annum
Tier 3 (under $150,000) is $210.00 +GST per annum
