The Dorothy Butler Children's Bookshop
The Dorothy Butler Children's Bookshop is a much loved Auckland institution and one of the only specialist children's bookshops in the city. Dorothy Butler, a well known NZ children's writer and literacy expert, established the shop in her home in 1964. When the business outgrew her living room it moved to Glenfield and then in the 1980s shifted to its current site in Ponsonby. Dorothy sold the shop in 1990 but remained interested in it until her death at the age of 90 in 2015.
In September 2015 the shop was bought by us, sisters Mary and Helen Wadsworth. Reading and books have been a big part of our lives and we are excited to be part of the great community of people that encourage children and young people to read.
We want our book store to be a place of delight for anyone who enters. We hope you feel welcome and comfortable when you come to browse or buy. We and our book-loving staff are very happy to help you find the right book or gift for your child. If it's not in stock, we will attempt to hunt it down for you. We are happy to post items nationwide and world-wide.
As well as a wide range of great quality books we also stock puzzles, games and toys so we are a great place to come for gifts.
We also work with schools to promote books and reading. We can run bookfairs for schools in Auckland and we are happy to help teachers and librarians find great books to stock their classrooms and libraries.
