Pae Pukapuka is an independent online bookstore based in Invercargill, New Zealand, dedicated to promoting and celebrating the diverse voices of indie authors. As a Māori, women-owned business, we strive to cultivate an inclusive environment that honours our culture while offering a curated selection of literature that resonates with our community. We’re committed to fostering a love for reading and storytelling, inspiring individuals of all ages and backgrounds to explore the world through books.

Since launching on January 1st, 2024, as a bookstagram account, Pae Pukapuka has grown into a thriving space that sells both pre-loved and new books, with a particular focus on New Zealand indie authors. We’re excited to be introducing monthly book boxes, including themed boxes such as LGBT+ and NZ-specific collections, celebrating the rich diversity of voices in these genres. We’re also thrilled to announce the launch of our podcast Kaituhi Kōrero | Author Talks (@kaituhikorero), where we connect with indie authors from New Zealand and Australia to talk all things writing, publishing, and beyond.

This year has been a whirlwind of reading amazing indie books, and while it’s impossible to pick just one favourite, I always recommend picking up an indie book! These often get overshadowed by traditionally published works, but there are so many incredible stories, especially from Aotearoa. We’re also announcing a new indie author every week on our Instagram, so be sure to follow along!
We’re supported by the wonderful New Zealand creator @bookblossompa, who helps us bring our vision to life with stunning reels that capture the essence of what we do. Not only is she incredibly talented at creating content, but she’s also a wonderful Author PA who supports indie authors in many ways.
Pae Pukapuka is run by myself and my trusty four-legged companions, Bilbo, Pippin, and Smaug (can you guess the book?). While I handle the administrative side of things, Bilbo, Pippin, and Smaug oversee order packing and make sure our office is zooming with energy! Together, we form a small part of the whānau behind Pae Pukapuka, which is supported by the incredible book community that welcomed us. Without the wonderful New Zealand book community, Pae Pukapuka would still be a dream, not the reality it has become.
