What is a Book Token?
A Book Token is the ultimate gift for a book lover: a beautiful, flexible paper token that works at independent bookshops and Paper Plus stores right across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Buy one at your favourite indie, and your recipient can spend it at theirs. No posting parcels, no hoping the right store has a gift card — just the freedom to choose their next great read, wherever they love to shop. Book Tokens have been connecting book lovers since 1963, and they’re in-store only, making them the perfect analogue gift for the readers in your life.
Where can I buy a Book Token?
Book Tokens are available at any Booksellers Aotearoa NZ member store (see Member Directory) or Paper Plus group store (see Paper Plus Store Locator).
You can also purchase them through the Booksellers NZ online store — your token will be posted to you with a token cover. If you’d like us to send it directly to the lucky recipient, just enter a personalised message at checkout and we’ll take care of the rest.
Where can I spend a Book Token?
Please note: Book Tokens are in-store only and cannot be spent online.
What can I spend my Book Token on?
Book Tokens can be exchanged for books at any participating member store or Paper Plus. They cannot be used to purchase lottery tickets, postage stamps, or goods sold by other agencies within a store.
What denominations are available?
Book Tokens come in five set values: $10, $20, $25, $50, and $100.
Do Book Tokens expire?
Book Tokens are valid for three years from the date of purchase, so there’s plenty of time for even the most indecisive reader to find their next favourite book.

Can I use multiple Book Tokens in one transaction?
Absolutely. Because Book Tokens come in set denominations, you can stack as many as you need to cover your purchase.
What if the book costs more than my token value?
No problem — simply pay the difference with cash or card. Please note that Book Tokens must be used in full in a single transaction, so it’s worth choosing a book or books that match or exceed your token value.
Can I exchange a Book Token for cash?
Book Tokens cannot be exchanged for cash. They are designed to be spent on books — the best possible use for them.
Can I buy a Book Token as a last-minute gift?
For last-minute gifting, your best bet is heading into a member store or Paper Plus. You can pick one up on the spot, no waiting required. If you order through the Booksellers NZ online store, please allow 3–5 business days for standard delivery.
What should I check before gifting a Book Token?
Make sure your token has been stamped with the issuing bookseller’s name and date of issue — this is what validates it for the recipient when they come to spend it. If you purchase in-store, your bookseller will take care of this. If you order online through Booksellers NZ, this will be handled before it’s posted to you.
