2025 marks 50 years of celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori in Aotearoa!
Born of activism, Te Wiki began as a single Māori Language Day in 1972. The idea of expanding to a full week was seeded in 1974, and by 1975, Te Wiki had found its footing. You can head to www.reomaori.co.nz to learn more about the history and ongoing mahi of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori.
Wherever you are on your reo Māori journey, the pukapuka in our Te Reo Māori category on BookHub can help you gain the confidence and understanding to incorporate te reo into your everyday vocabulary. Many publishers in Aotearoa are committed to preserving te reo Māori as a forever language, and on BookHub you can find pukapuka that has been translated into or originally written in te reo Māori. There’s something for every kind of reader, so click here to see BookHub’s range of pakimaero (novels), pono (non-fiction) or puka whakaahua (picture books) in te reo Māori.
This week is also a wonderful opportunity to explore te ao Māori, the Māori worldview, and we have plenty of books embracing and explaining mātauranga Māori, tikanga, Māori history and scholarship, toi Māori, and more in our Te Ao Māori category.
Ake ake ake, mō ake tonu te reo!
