The team at Booksellers Aotearoa NZ are thrilled to share our updated designs for our Booksellers exchange cards, perfectly timed for the Christmas season!

Booksellers exchange cards can be bought and redeemed at any of our member bookshops around Aotearoa (excluding PaperPlus stores). For a full list of all independent bookshops that accept Booksellers exchange cards, see our member directory.
The Booksellers Aotearoa Exchange Card system is a sales aid to booksellers for those customers who want to buy a book as a gift but who are unsure whether the book is appropriate or may already have been read. Our members can find out more information about this system here.
“Booksellers New Zealand Exchange cards are the cornerstone of thoughtful gift-giving.
They offer your customers something priceless – peace of mind. When someone receives a book, they have already read or happens to get duplicate copies, these cards transform potential disappointment into a delightful possibility –the freedom to discover their next perfect read.
With participating stores throughout New Zealand, we are building a nationwide network of literary connections. Every exchange card represents not just a transaction, but a promise: that the joy of reading will find its way to the right person, at the right time.
Christmas amplifies everything – the joy, the generosity, and yes, the uncertainty of gift-giving. In this bustling season when customers want to give something meaningful, our exchange cards are their safety net and their secret weapon. They can choose with confidence, knowing their gift will bring joy, no matter what.
This is not just good business practice – it is how we honour the spirit of giving itself.”—Pene Whitty, University Bookshop Canterbury
“Let’s be honest – no matter how well you know someone, buying a book for them can be surprisingly tricky. What if they already own it? What if someone else beat you to it? Or worse – what if you’re just buying it so you can borrow it later?
That’s where Booksellers Exchange Cards are an absolute lifesaver.
Think of them like a book voucher, but with more thought behind them. They show you’ve taken the time to choose a book and that you care enough to give them the freedom to swap it if it’s not quite right. It’s a way of saying, “I hope you love this, but if not, no pressure.”
And the best part? No matter where they live, they can exchange it for something they truly want. We often receive books we’ve never stocked before, which helps us expand and diversify our range. Everyone’s a winner – the customer, the recipient, and the bookshop.”—Mary Fawcett, Schrödinger’s Books
